Safari holidays in Kenya are ranked among the most exciting holiday getaways in the World.

Kenya is a fascinating country that all wildlife lovers should definitely consider when planning a vacation. Situated in East Africa, Kenya lies on the equator and is historically famous for it’s abundant wildlife. It was here that the first wildlife safari holidays were organized, and until today, it’s the most popular vacation spot in Africa.

Kenya has numerous conservation areas and national parks such as the Masai Mara. It holds a wide range of amazing creatures and unique landscapes. So during your safari holidays in Kenya, you will observe wildlife in it’s true and natural habitat, the “Animal Kingdom”. Watching a majestic lion on a screen or in a local zoo is nothing compared to witnessing a tense lion hunt in the middle of the savanna.

A safari holiday in Kenya is not only a “wild” experience but also a chance to discover relaxation, peace and natural beauty. A hot air balloon ride above the Masai Mara, a luxurious private camp set up for you in the middle of the savanna, a nap under a palm tree followed by a jet ski ride in Mombasa… These are just a few activities you can experience during a fun and relaxing holiday in Kenya.

Our safari holidays are created to suit every expectation of the demanding traveler(s). As stated previously HERE, a family safari will take the children into account, just as a honeymoon safari will focus on romantic locations and activities for the couple. So whether you are a fierce adventurer, a curious couple, or a fun loving family, a wildlife safari in Kenya is a truly unique and enjoyable experience.

At On Safari Africa, we create your safari, one that suits your special needs and fully respects your personal budget (Click Here for a FREE QUOTE).

This is why numerous possibilities can be chosen when booking your tailor made vacation. It is therefore necessary to take your time when planning your safari holidays in Kenya, in order to love every single minute. Another advantage of planning your vacation in advance is the fact that it will save you money. Proper planning and preparation will have a positive impact on your budget.

Lastly, the best period to embark on your safari holidays in Kenya is during the dry seasons : From January to March, and from July to October. The shortage of rain during this period makes wildlife easier to spot.

The explanation is simple : the animals are much more likely to assemble around sources of water such as rivers and lakes. Additionally, less water means less vegetation which makes it easier to spot wildlife at a distance. And as the herbivore species gather during this period, it’s also much more frequent to watch the carnivore species hunt down there prey.

Enjoy your holidays in Kenya !

Many children dream of going on a family safari since the various “Tarzan” movies and more recently the “The Lion King“ and the “Madagascar” series.

Many safari holiday programs are created without taking children into account. Early morning and night wildlife safari game drives are quite thrilling but can sometimes prove to be less suitable for the younger ones.

The solution is to create a wildlife safari schedule suitable for children. It is also necessary to include specific activities for the children and avoid very long distances when driving through the animal reserves.

Family-friendly activities In Kenya can include a visit to the Giraffe Manor in Nairobi where children can feed the rare Rothschild giraffes from a platform. This always delights the children, and the adults too, as it’s a truly unique experience. You can also spend the night at the luxurious Manor and share your breakfast under the sun with the giraffes.

There’s also the Daphne Sheldrick orphanage that takes care of orphan baby elephants and rhinos, and can be visited in the morning or in the afternoon (on appointment). The children can then touch the sweet animals and even assist the keepers in certain activities such as bottle-feeding them. This is great fun for the kids.

In various wildlife reserves, some lodges or camps have specific activities for children. One example is the “Heritage Hotels” that offer an Adventurers Club for children aged 4 to 12 and a Rangers Club for children aged 12 to 17. Children will learn to track animals by learning to recognize their tracks, make moulds of their tracks, identify different trees and plants, and visit a traditional Samburu or Masai village.

They will discover the local culture, meet with children of their age in these villages, learn songs and dances, learn how to make beaded adornments, listen to traditional stories, learn how to launch a spear and use a bow and arrow, build a hut, light a fire with two sticks, and so on and so forth. With such activities, the children will really love the family safari.

There are also lodges in private game sanctuaries such as Loisaba that offer activities such as horse riding, camel trekking, mountain bike riding and fishing. Not to mention the hotels on the Indian Ocean coast that have many activities for children and adults as well.

In the early 1970′s, Kenya held one of the biggest populations of the African Lion, with over twenty thousand of these majestic big cats. But thirty two years on, in the year 2002, it had lost about 88%. The african lion population in Kenya had therefore dropped to about 2750.

Today, there are slightly more than 2000 african lions in Kenya.

Various factors have contributed to this huge decline in the african lion population, such as : Climate change, Loss of habitat due to human development, Disease and of course Human-wildlife conflict.

The Masai Mara National Reserve hosts a third of the total african lion population in Kenya. It is the biggest lion density in the world. There are about 700 lions in the Masai Mara, occupying an area measuring 1500 km². It is therefore vital to intensively protect the remaining lions. Here is a short poignant example of how we protect our african lion population :

When the Mara Mobile veterinary unit was informed of an injured lion, they rushed to the spot to ascertain the report. On this occasion, this particular pride comprising four young adult males and more than seven females had successfully managed to kill an Eland. One of the lead male lions was left nursing a serious injury on its underbelly. The injury was sustained during the hunt, from the sharp horns of it’s prey.

On assessment it was concluded that a veterinary surgeon was urgently needed to stitch the deep wound. The Kenya Wildlife Service Veterinary Department quickly provided a veterinarian. The vet was immediately booked by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust on the next available flight to the nearest airstrip. On arrival he was rushed immediately to the injured lion and went straight to business.

The lion was successfully darted and slowly went to sleep. The surgery took over an hour and by the time it was over, it was already getting dark. Let’s not forget that the whole intervention was done under the scrutiny of the pride of lions, 10 meters away ! Somehow, the pride acknowledged the fact that we were here to help. Amazing !

On being revived from anaesthesia, the lion slowly and peacefully joined the pride. The operation was a success !

Long live the African Lion !

Join us now on an exciting African Lion Safari.
